Cover image of Brock Education Journal

Vol 25, No 1 (2015)

Igor Mitoraj (1944-2014) was a Polish artist whose alluring sculptures can be found in numerous locations around the world. The current cover of the Brock Education Journal depicts Mitoraj's sculpture entitled "Head" created in 2003.This sculpture graces the interior of the Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri Basilica (Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs) in Rome, Italy, a structure designed by the renaissance master Michelangelo Buonarraroti in 1563-1564. This basilica was built directly inside the ruins of the Diocletian Baths (built in 298-306), the largest and most impressive of the imperial Roman baths ever to be constructed. With this current issue's theme of Knowledge Mobilization, this particular photographic print was selected for its depiction of a human head bound in cloth, leaving exposed the tools of vision and voice, two vehicles through which the act of Knowledge Mobilization can take place. Involving the process of connecting research to policy and practice, the visual depiction breathes an abstract, yet concrete sense of understanding Knowledge Mobilization across space and time.

Alberto Giacometti's Tall Nude Standing III

Vol 24, No 2 (2015)

The current BJE cover features Alberto Giacometti's Tall Nude Standing III, which he completed in 1960.  Situated in the public rotunda of Berlin's Museum Berggruen, Giacometti's vertical lines expressed in this representative figure, not only compliment but accentuate the graceful curves of the surrounding circular staircase.

2012 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Sir Isaac Brock, our University’s namesake. Major General Brock died on Queenston Heights defending the Canadian border in the War of 1812. In honour of this anniversary, the cover of this issue of Brock Education features a detail of a portrait of Brock that can be found in the Special Collections and Archives of the university.  The cropping of the image was designed with two goals in mind. First, the focus on the epaulette on Brock’s shoulder symbolizes his rank and power. Second, the focus on Brock’s ear is symbolic of the act and notion of listening to one another as we move forward in complex times.

200 Years Later.... As he rallied his troops, Brock cried “Surgite!” (Latin for “Forward!). Surgite!, the university motto, reflects the university’s commitment to taking risks and chances. Brock University is a progressive institution looking ahead as we approach 50 years of higher learning in 2014 .
